I've done a few articles that discuss the importance of appreciation, but I've never really delved any deeper… I've explained to you why, but never how…So throughout this article, I'm going to show you how to fully appreciate every second you live. In essence, my entire rationalization is founded upon one singular idea, the idea of living in the "now". When I say living in the now I mean to clear your thoughts entirely and engulf yourself with your current surroundings. All too often the precious moments of life are tainted by our interminable thoughts and uncertainties. You may be physically walking through the park, but are you 100% there mentally? Or are you thinking about the promotion you want at work? Or the grade you got in English class?
You may not realize it but humans are believed to think roughly 70,000 thoughts a day. Next time you're experiencing one of life's precious moments… Walking on the beach with your spouse, playing with your children, or just having dinner with your loved ones… Watch your thoughts; watch how easily you drift away from your surroundings and into your worries. Watch how those thoughts pull you away from the now and drag you into a partially conscious, deterred, state of mind… And after you come to the realization of how detrimental this could be… Change it. A positive aspect of that previous fact (70,000 thoughts a day) is that it could be significantly altered. It's easily possible to cut that number in half, leaving you with around 35,000 thoughts per day, which from my viewpoint, is a much healthier number.
…So you're telling me to think less? Yes and No… Consider this example by my close friend Deepak Chopra ("close friend" being loosely defined as me reading his books and him having no idea who I am)… Sit for a second and consider how memory works. When you see someone's face but can't quite remember his name, what do you do? If you struggle to remember, the very effort seems to shut down the power of recall. But we've all experienced how a forgotten name or fact will suddenly come to us when we're not trying to remember at all. Just letting go of the whole business seems to activate the power of recall.
I suggest applying this to every facet of life… let go of the things you can't control, don't let your doubts take away those ever so rare and valued moments… Over thinking your worries will only hurt you in the short and long run… Let go of the "whole business" and let things work themselves out. I'm not suggesting that you eliminate all of your thoughts entirely, just the negative/unnecessary ones. Life is short…Live it, stop worrying, and seize every day…
